Mountains are the stunning scenery for most of the Hydropower plants that have been able to donate us clean energy for more than a century.

Hydropower is a nonpollution source of electricity that could decrease our dependence on fossil fuels and minimize environmental impacts. Moreover, plants could be able to control hydrogeologic layout that in the later years had threaten these areas, creating exciting new opportunities both for the cultural and for the environmental impact.

We should therefore dispel the myth that technologies such as Hydropower plants can provoke high environmental impact and pollution: nowadays turbine’s technology is fish-friendly oriented and, together with low operations and maintenance costs, there are no waste-disposal problems related to its operation.

As a renewable energy source, hydropower is theoretically inexhaustible, but many sites have already been exploited. For this simple reason, challenging projects that we face in the mountainous context are for sure the revampings of dismissed power plants.

To explain with numbers what great source we have, we must say that Italy is the world’s 14th largest producer of hydroelectric power, with a total of 50,582 GWh produced in 2010; in the same year energy from hydro accounted for about 18% of the national electricity production.
Hydroelectric plants are especially widespread in the north, where there are many rivers and mountains. Lombardy, Piedmont and Trentino-Alto Adige contributed for almost 60% of the total energy production in 2010.

Join our discussion, we are eager to involve your enthusiasm into this wonderful topic!
